Oklahoma income tax — what you need to know
Oklahoma uses a progressive income tax, which means income is taxed at increasingly higher rates as it rises. This is how federal income taxes work too. Importantly, each rate only applies to the income within that bracket — not to your total income. If you earn $80,000 in Oklahoma, you're not paying the highest applicable rate on all $80,000; you're paying lower rates on your first dollars of income and the higher rate only on the portion that falls in the top bracket. Oklahoma offers a standard deduction of $6,350 for single filers.
Federal income tax: how it works
Federal income tax is the same regardless of which state you live in. In 2025, single filers subtract a standard deduction of $14,600 (the amount of income the IRS lets you shelter from tax entirely) from their gross income to get taxable income. That taxable income is then taxed using progressive brackets:
| Taxable income (single) | Tax rate |
|---|---|
| $0 – $11,925 | 10% |
| $11,925 – $48,475 | 12% |
| $48,475 – $103,350 | 22% |
| $103,350 – $197,300 | 24% |
| $197,300 – $250,525 | 32% |
| $250,525 – $626,350 | 35% |
| Over $626,350 | 37% |
FICA: Social Security and Medicare
FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) is two separate payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare — both independent of income tax. Social Security tax is 6.2% of gross wages up to $176,100 (the 2025 Social Security wage base, the annual income ceiling above which no additional Social Security tax is owed). Medicare tax is 1.45% on all wages with no cap. High earners (over $200,000 in wages for single filers) also owe an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax. Your employer pays a matching amount for both Social Security and Medicare — you pay 7.65% and so does your employer.
